well. i went down to speed source to give the st165 a spin real quick. she's not done yet, just a few minor things like fixing the ehxuast, wiring up the gauges, and such. unfortunately because of the holiday season it's going to take a few weeks. i got to drive it though, and i'm happy with it, so it's worth the wait.

anyway. i got two shifts out of the car and immediately decided that i needed a short-throw shifter. i've had a hardcore bias against short throw shifters because i've seen so many of them done wrong, but after driving my '07 FA5 civic si and my '05 ZZE131 corolla xrs, rowing gears in the celica felt more like shifting gears from on top of a latter with a broomstick than anything else.

i think half the problem is just the lack of weight in the knob. i know how retarded it would sound to me two weeks ago, but after driving the FA5, which comes from the factory with a weighted knob, it REALLY makes a difference.

anyway, i went to the TWM website and priced out a short-throw and a flat-black type R knob (curiously similar to my civics...). wondering if anyone has any feedback or pictures of the st165 with the short shifter. from the installation instructions on TWM's website, the shifter looks just a little short for my tastes, especially considering how far forward the shifter is in an st165, but i would still like some feedback. also, does anyone know of any other companies that make good quality short-throws for the st16x?

sorry about the long post.

You could do what most people do, and source an st204 (94-99 gt) shifter. Its shorter then stock, and relatively inexpensive compared to twm (of course its also not as short).

Just go to http://www.6gc.net and post for a stock shifter. Most people will let them go for 20-30 dollars + S&H. Lol a lot of them have upgraded to a twm short shifter so there should be someone with stock one available.

There's also some info in the Tuning page of the alltrac.net site.

hope this helps

yeah, that's definately way to short for my tastes. i definately appreciate it , though. looks like i'm going to continue my hunt for an st204 shifter.

btw - i'm liking the ma70 shift knob

anyone have pics of that in an st165?

Here's my twm with a twos'r'us shift knob........... it did feel way too short when i first put it on but now i wouldnt drive the car without it after driving a car that had the stock shifter....
(yeah i know i have to clean the paint dust from the interior still)

the shorter you make the shifter itself the notchier and harder the shifts become. some people don't mind that. also, the st165 shifter sits pretty far forward.

$30 will get me an st204 shifter, whereas a twm is rather expensive.

now; if i don't like the st204 shifter by all means i'll be looking at a twm. from 88st165's pics, i don't think it's all that short, just a LITTLE bit too short for my tastes. i'm sure i'll lbe satisfied with the st204 shifter and a weighted shift knob.

i didnt know the st204 shifter would work.... i thought it was totally different.... i wanted to get a twm knob but it was way too expensive at the time, ill prob get the weighted type r knob in the future...

i had the twm by means of a direct trade of parts to TWM back when they had a project celica. so i didn't pay for it. as such it was nice. next time i wanted a short shifter, i didn't have 150+ to pay. i did the st204 in the st185. personally i found it felt very similar to how the twm felt in the st165. i'm hoping for the same results when i stick my current st204 shifter in my st165.

i might just decide to install it tomorrow, for the sake of this thread...we'll see.

The st204 shift lever will work, but its a pain in the ass getting it out of the 204 base. Putting it into the 165 base is easy though. I Actually used the 205 lever out of my front clip, but they are basically the same. The only difference is that the rhd 205 lever I used hooks left away from the driver, just as a lhd 204 hooks right away from the driver because of the tight intereor on a sixth gen. The rhd one actually seems to fit better imo in the 165 intereor hooking towards the driver like that. I am very happy with the throw and length of it although with the 205 lever it is INCREDIBLY notchy.....
TRD leather shift knob and custom leather shift boot stitched w/ trd colors :D
Excuse how dirty the intereor of my car is... I have been way too lazy to clean it lately... Also excuse how my center console peice does not fit... its a 162 one that I ghetto rigged to work. Still have not found a black one from an all trac/gt-s (w/ auto climate control)

i'm all about that type R knob.

yeah, if you're willing to throw up some pics of the st165 w/ the st204 it would be awesome.

i'm intending on doing a before and after with pics like 88st165 put up. maybe if i get the angle right we could sticky up a thread with ALL the pics together: stock, st204, twm.

i, too, don't normally like short shifter kits because they usually make it too short and hard to get into the proper gear; i like having some amount of throw, you know... but the stock ST165 throw is just RIDICULOUS, so i got a TWM which i thought was just right. it's long enough so i know i'm shifting yet not too short. i got a medium-tallness momo wood shift knob, so that it's not overly short, that may help.

Yep, I'm bringing this thread back from the dead to quote myself. Been thinking about a shifter for the "new" st165, and honestly couldn't remember what I had in my old one. I thought I had either a 6th gen or 7th gen shifter in the st165. I have no memory of the TWM trade that I mention. Old man brain. o_O I mean...I sort of remember as I read it, but zero details have emerged from the depths of my memory (so many cobwebs). Of course, getting a TWM is no longer an option anyway.

I guess I'll look for an st204 shifter. I have a generic short shifter that was in my zzt231 when I bought it...but I removed it because I didn't like it. So there's no reason to try to put it in the st165. I need to get some shifter cable bushings as well. Shifts feel a bit sloppy right now.
