Minor disaster strikes Night Fury!

Picking up where I left off. The next few days I drove my Tundra because I needed it and had to travel farther than I normally do for work. I felt that I needed to take more time to checkout Fury before considering her reliable. January 27th I again drove Fury to work. We had warmer temperatures in the afternoon. As I got in to drive to a job site that is about 15 minutes away, I noticed the smell of gasoline. I then drove to the site, I was expected there and was to relieve another operator, so he could leave for an out of town gig. I smelled gasoline again as I was driving. I got to the site, pulled up to park, and looked down under the front of the car from the driver‘s seat. I saw gasoline pouring down in a stream near the firewall! I immediately shut the engine off and lifted the hood carefully. I saw the fuel coming out of a line next to the one that I had connected the return line to. Apparently, I had clamped it to the wrong one! I realized it was being pushed out of the tank by pressure due to the warmer weather heating up the fuel. I popped the fuel door and slowly unscrewed the cap to relieve the pressure. It stopped flowing out right away. Then I got a pair of pliers and switched the return hose to that hard line near the firewall. I had noticed my fuel gauge dropping faster than I thought it should have that morning. That solved the problem. Thankfully, I figured it out before something really bad happened. I had marked and labeled every hose and wire that was not obvious to me. But the masking tape that I had put on that line near the firewall had come off somewhere along the way. I read my description on the tape label that was on the fuel return hose, but it was unclear which of two lines it was intended to go on. I guessed wrong in the excitement of the first startup in months when fuel was dumping out of the return hose in the shop days before. I was now hoping that I had worked out all the bugs and I could return get some much needed and desired drive time in! The next post will finish this story and bring us up to current. Till then, drive on!

The following week(end of January start of February) I alternated between the Tundra and All-Trac for commuting. She was running great, no more problems and I was enjoying the fruits of all my labors, getting Fury back on the road! The first full week of February was now at hand. Busy with homeowner chores on my short weekend( worked for employer on Saturday) there was no time for pleasure driving. So when the next work week started, I drove Fury to work each day. Wednesday (February 7)was an especially pleasant afternoon, so after work I took a longer way toward home with windows down and sunroof tipped up. I decided to meet my girlfriend in town at the grocery store, so we could shop together for the coming weekend trip to celebrate my birthday at a cabin on a 12 acre ranch Near Comfort Texas. I had washed fury the previous day while in Austin for work, she was looking good and was was very proud to be driving such a sweet ride! The next morning February 8th, I again started her up for the drive into work. I took the previously mentioned longer and curvy way to my job, as I often do, to avoid the interstate. Did some spirited driving and passing through the remote part between towns. Then as I was coming out of the “country” into the “ suburbs” I was approaching an intersection when I take a left turn to go past local schools. Coming out of a construction zone where I had to slow down due to uneven and un striped shifting lanes, I could see the light ahead was green for me so all looked good. There is a new convenience fuel station on the right and an older one on the left side of the intersection as I approached the light. Suddenly, I noticed the headlights of a pickup truck that should’ve been waiting for me me to pass in front of him on my right side. He was turning left from the new fuel store drive way to head onto the road I was driving on back toward the direction I came from. This guy did not see me coming for some reason, despite my headlights and fog lights(pre dawn). I thought surely he will see me and stop, I was too close to be able to stop myself in time, so I took evasive action and swerved left into the oncoming lane. There were no vehicles there at that moment since my left turn light was green, as previously mentioned. But tjis guy did not stop nor slow down he was accelerating quickly! Despite my quick reaction to avoid the fool, I could not clear him in time! He struck my front fender and wheel hard with the most force apparently at about the passenger door hinge area. I steered off into the shoulder to my left as I stopped the car. I got out and looked back to see the pickup rolling backward into the driveway where it had come from. I tipped my head up to the dark sky and screamed out an F-bomb at the top of my lungs. Then looked back to make sure the offending driver was not trying to make a getaway(common occurrence these days in my part of the world). He was not, and I noticed a man trying to talk to me from the other side of the street. I was unable to hear him since the light had now changed and I was in the left shoulder or wrong side of the road, as other morning commuters sped by in both directions. After a moment, the traffic cleared enough for me to cross on foot and get to him. He told me to save his name and phone number on my phone. He had witnessed the entire thing as he was at a diesel pump filling up his dump truck, and took immediate aftermath photos. I quickly thanked him, saved the info and asked him to keep an eye on the truck so I could get my car off the road before another accident occurred. He told me to put my flashers on so people would be alert. Fury was still running, so I jumped in and put her in gear and pulled forward when the way was clear and into the older fuel store driveway on my left. It was the fastest way to get Fury safely off the busy road and shut her off, since I was now smelling overheated electrical wiring or components. Found a parking spot, took some photos of the damages and got back across the street to contact the other driver. My friendly witness met me and we spoke some more, he assured me that he had got the license plate and other important details. The rest need not be related play by play. Short version is. He didn’t speak english well. We used his phone to translate. No driver’s license, pass port ID but did have insurance through a small semi-local agency. We both called for other people to come help translate. I contacted my boss, who lived three blocks away, he showed up quickly. I called for police to come for a report. No injuries either party. His airbag deployed and damage to the front bumper and grill of the F150. The entire passenger side of Fury from the front fender to just in front the rear wheel was smashed in. Windshield, passenger window front right rim and tire destroyed. When I restarted her to get positioned for the flatbed towtruck, I started to see smoke coming up from under the passenger side dash. Shut her down and disconnected the battery. See the damage for yourselves.IMG_3354.jpegIMG_3353.jpegIMG_3352.jpegIMG_3350.jpeg

This is OUTRAGEOUS! I'm so MAD for you. Hopefully you get a HUGE payout. This is unacceptable and I'm so upset that these things happens. No drivers license, no passport... somehow still had insurance. People without drivers licenses should NOT be on the road. Period. These are 2-4 ton weapons, and those without proper knowledge can NOT put the general public at risk. I'm glad you and all involved are OK physically, but fight this tooth and nail.

I'm pulling for you - I hope all these negatives result in positives in the long run.

My greatest condolences! Truly heartbreaking....I know I probably can't be of help but please let me know if I can. I just got out of an back to back accident with 621, one with a stopped driver, and another with a runner. All I can hope for you is that insurance makes it worthwhile and that everything works out quickly. I know you'll get it taped back together and I'm very glad that you made it out physically alright. Everything in due time works to your advantage.

The help I can offer is from what I learned dealing with my fender (also got ruined) If you're willing to wait and don't mind having exposed carbon on your car, Carbon Microsystem has some fenders for 600 euro per side. Even with a hookup my paint bill for the fender alone was $800 not including the new fender. The GTS fender is the same shape to my knowledge of the widebodies so if you don't like carbon, that's another cost saver. Got my fender from a local junkyard from a GT. I don't know about the door but I hope that works out as well. My front suspension got taken on the left side, and RockAuto also had a handful of parts for that too, so it might be worth checking there. They asked about a quarter of the main box stores so it worked out.

Oh Man, this is Awful! I am so sorry for your loss! I hope you are able to get compensated fully for the damages. Do you have classic car insurance on Night Fury and an agreed upon value? Hopefully you have good insurance and they go to battle for you.

There are so many idiots out there on the roads that shouldn't be driving. Around here, people text when they drive all the time. If I could be a traffic cop for one day I think I would set a record for tickets issued for distracted driving.

Also, trucks (and cars) have gotten so big now and older cars are so much harder to see. Still, that is no excuse. Luckily it sounds like your defensive driving made the damage less than it could have been and you weren't hurt.

Best of luck on getting Night Fury fixed and back on the road.

Thank you Tippo. I am very frustrated about it. I was out for a Birthday weekend out of town when I finished the previous posts. You may recall, that I won the ebay auction for the car on my birthday a year ago. Two days prior to one year, and thus sh*t happens! I just don’t know what to think. I have had terrible luck concerning this car, but I love it and it hurts to see what happened to it! It was a joy to drive and was running just beautifully after working out the bugs. I had plans to do more things to improve or at least make it mine. Plans that I had before the timing belt broke, that got put on hold. I have spent thousands of dollars over the price I paid for it a year ago, and did it gladly. But now it just seems like it was wasted. I have been collecting data both about my specific car and the ST185 sub-model. Arming myself for the battle that I know is coming. Any info that any of you have that may help me is welcome. I need data from known trust worthy sources. I found a Hemmings article that stated the production numbers for ST185 sales in the US by year, that will help prove rarity. I need more examples of semi-recent sales of these cars, that show high values for cars in the condition that Fury was. I have two online articles that featured my car, when it was for sale on Craigslist prior to the ebay listing that I won. The offending driver‘s insurance company has said that they are” accepting responsibility“. Meaning that they know their client caused the wreck. They are now going to determine what to do. I have looked closely at the damage. There is damage to the roof near the moonroof and windshield strut is bent. On the inside the door panel is pushed up tight to the dash so that it is wrinkled. the spot where the door hinges hold the door on is buckled in. With this many different parts damaged they are likely to just write it off. I fear they are going to lowball the total loss amount. Engine still runs fine and nothing leaking. But body, chassis, glass and electrical all severely damaged. Just really sucks.

Let me know if you need an invoice but my paid cost for my car was $14,000. I can send it over and have it copied and what not 56k km etc etc Same color too.

Thank you Pauly. I did not put the classic insurance on it. I have two other cars insured that way, and was considering doing that. Obviously, I now wish that I had done it, instead of just thinking that I needed to do that eventually.

The kinds of things that might help are articles either online or printed by well known sources that feature these cars and express their rarity( US Versions) and value as collector cars. Also, sales of US versions 90-93 that record good condition, relatively low mileage( Fury is at 122,xxx) and sales prices over $7000.00 that are from the past 8 or so years. Rhd sales in those general numbers may also help, though they can argue that they are not comparable since they are not domestic. Gotta go for now, sleep before operating heavy equipment is necessary for an older guy like me.

you may black out the personal info, or just tell me the platform or communicate the place you bought it from. I don’t want your personal info involved.
Yea for sure, insurance can't really request a document like this soooo....GooNet Exchange, imported. I pmed You a copy of the federal taxable price which is sales price of the car (everything correlating to me is either cropped or covered).
Stats On my car that could help
JDM
bought at 56,570KM
blackish Khaki paint code
Narrowbody
Sold as clean car, no accident history, Running
Stock
Factory optioned with 10 Speaker system and Enkei Sport rims
Let me know what else you may need

Forgot to mention this as well. They had at the time of my purchase some models in similar condition exceeding 20k USD

That sucks! Now that I think about it, I should probably up mine for the 280Z. I think I just have it insured for about what I paid for it, but I think it is worth a little more than that.

Hopefully this helps to provide All-Trac and GT-Four values:
Classic.com Celica GT-Four (All-Trac) Historical Values

Bring-A-Trailer Recent 1990 to 1993 Celica Auction Results
The good news is that the values seem to have been trending upwards in the past few years. Gone are the days that you could get a nice, clean ST-185 for around $10k.

I think Hemmings has an online valuation tool too, but I think you need to input specific vehicle information. I checked Hagerty, but they only go up to 1983 for the Celica. SMH. One day hopefully they will wake up and realize these cars are awesome and collectable.

I have my ST185 insured for $25,000 on Hagerty through a third party insurance broker. Not that it helps really, but they accepted the value based on the rarity. Do not settle, especially since it's not your fault. Do whatever it takes to get value for fixing it and try not to total her... it's so hard to find them lately. That means even having the body straightened out by a shop with new fenders/doors and whatever. The amount of time and effort you put into it the short amount of time you've had it allows for the maximum capability to fix her.

Thanks for the info an encouragemen! I consulted a lawyer bout this yesterday. He recommends getting an appraisal by a company that specializes in classic, vintage and collectible cars. I am in the process of selecting one or more. No word yet from the insurance company on their decision. The delay is giving me the time I need to be prepare. I want Fury fixed, period.
