vehicle history according to CarFax: Originally sold in Nevada, December 1987. In April 1991, Nevada issued a rebuild title for this vehicle. It was auctioned 5 months later in California with a new title and no rebuild brand on the title at 32,000 miles. Sold again in November 1993 @ 56k miles. Sold to the guy I bought it from in 1998 w/ 58k miles.
Car stayed in the greater Los Angeles area for several years, and then moved to Dalles-Fort Worth Texas. Previous owner installed a new Centerforce Dual Friction clutch/pressure plate and new engine valve stem seals. note: all body panels are straight, panel gaps are even, and alignment is spot-on (no wheel set-back or offset).
what I did since purchase in late 2015 w/ 79,400 miles:
front struts have coilover sleeves w/ Hyperco springs and KYB adjustable inserts
rear struts modified to accept KYB AGX adjustable strut inserts (stock springs)
front inner and outer tie-rods replaced
rear radius and trailing arms have new spherical joints, rear toe arms have poly bushings
new rear diff mount w/ voids poly filled
front CV axles replaced
fuel tank cleaned / sealed / lined by Mac's Radiator
VW MKIV Golf Jarama wheels sand blasted/painted gloss black with hub-centric spacers and almost new 195-60-15 Sumitomo HTR A/S 202 tires, also have original peeling chrome stock wheels if wanted
original torn blue leather front & rear seats swapped to clean/not torn blue cloth from an '88 GTS
cracked dash swapped to very clean/not cracked dash from an '88 GTS
current condition: it's been sitting for the last 2 years as I turned my attention to other projects
engine starts right up and idles / revs fine
paint is pretty much shot from sitting out in the sun (Vegas, So Cal, Texas). there are a few spots of light surface rust on the sunroof panel, and a few small rock-chip spots on the hood as well as a couple other spots. There is no extensive rot or rust holes that I am aware of.
There's a lot of smoke coming from the tailpipe, I think it's coming from the turbo center cartridge but don't know for sure. Engine or turbo has an oil leak, after a few minutes of running it starts smoking from somewhere under the turbo.
1st and 2nd gears grind unless it's shifted slowly
between the tail pipe and engine smoke, it's not drivable on public streets and must be towed.
